Fines discourage jaywalkng

Police are buckling down on jaywalkers and drivers along both West University Avenue and Southwest 13th Street.

The Gainesville Police Department will issue warnings this week and start issuing citations next week.

Fines start at $52.50 for pedestrians and $144 for drivers who do not yield to pedestrians.

“There are so many kids coming to and from the school on these streets,” said GPD spokeswoman Officer Summer Hallett. “You can’t drive down University without kids running through the streets.”

To avoid fines, pedestrians are required to use crosswalks and obey traffic signals. Drivers must yield to anyone in a crosswalk.

UF freshman Noelle Anderson said she thought there was no reason for these fines.

“That’s more than the $30 parking fine on campus,” Anderson said.

Others disagreed.

“Campus is formed for pedestrians, so students forget that there is a higher speed limit on University,” said Justin Sterm, a fifth–year civil engineering student at UF.
